Fruits of the Spirit

If we want to grow as individuals and as a bunch of believers, we need God’s Spirit at work in our lives, and in our church. Fruit will grow where it is nurtured.

We trust that our Father will bless our meeting and really help us to grow the best fruit of all – the Fruit of the Spirit!

LOVE
When you really love something, you’ll do anything for it. Seen the perfect car or dress?  You’ll scrimp and save till you can afford it!

Met the love of your life?  You’ll do anything to impress, protect or encourage that perfect love.

Got a bunch of kids you adore? You’ll put yourself last for their sakes.

God so loved the world (that’s us, folks!) ……. that He gave His ONLY Son.

WOW!  What incredible love God has poured out on us.  That amazing love compels us to love others….our family, our friends, our work mates and school friends…. and even people we don’t like much!   His Spirit working in us will help us to do everything in love….even the hard things in life.

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” 1 John 3:1

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear”. 1 John 4:18

PEACE

An essential part of the Fruit of the Spirit is peace.

The Bible talks about a peace that goes beyond understanding – a peace deep in our hearts, knowing that our Father truly loves us.

Jesus said it’s his Father’s good pleasure to give us the kingdom.

We don’t need to fret and fuss. God has everything under control.   He will give us His peace now, and in the future.  We all have a desperate need to be filled with this peace of God – in our hearts, in our homes and in our family church at West Ryde.  But God is faithful……

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.  I do not give to you as the world gives.  Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”  John 14:27

PATIENCE

The trouble with us is that we’re not really very patient. Our society pushes immediate gratification so emphatically, that we sometimes forget that the best things in life come through patience.

We can’t hurry a tree to grow and bear fruit, or a baby to develop more quickly in the womb (9 months is SUCH a long time!!)

We can’t make our 2 year old behave like an adult, and nor can we change another person’s mind without gentle and open discussion.

All these things need patience, but when we do it God’s way – the way of the Spirit- we can all grow towards the perfect image of His Son, Jesus.  Let’s practice patience with each other, especially through difficult times, because we will be truly blessed if we do.

“Through patience a ruler can be persuaded, and a gentle tongue can break a bone.”  Proverbs 25:15

GOODNESS

When we’re little our parents often tell us to ‘be good’, or Granny might say “Have you been good today?” More often than not there are hidden sins that we might not wish to discuss with the adult in question!!  As followers of Jesus it’s sometimes hard to live a life of goodness.

Only God is good – that’s the definition Jesus gave us – but He wants us to be good too.  Not good in the “goody two shoes”, self righteous sense, but truly good – watching out for others and doing good for the people around us every day.

His Spirit at work in our hearts will help us to show goodness to everyone we meet.

I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.”  Psalm 27:13

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.” Psalm 34:8
